Evaluating the multi-media augmentation of lifelog events

Doherty, Aiden R. orcid logoORCID: 0000-0003-4395-7702 and Smeaton, Alan F. orcid logoORCID: 0000-0003-1028-8389 (2008) Evaluating the multi-media augmentation of lifelog events. In: Seminar at the Department of Information Studies, University of Tampere, 7 March 2008, Tampere, Finland.

Abstract
A device such as the Microsoft SenseCam shall accumulate an average of 650,000 images per year (taken from the perspective of the user). Aiden has investigated numerous techniques to optimally digest this vast collection of images, namely through grouping images into distinct events/activities; and also through the ability to search/retrieve similar events to a given event (e.g. "when was the last time I went for a walk in the park?"). This talk will focus on the application scenario of tourists using lifelogging devices, e.g. a trip to London, attending a big ice hockey game, etc. It is desirable to supplement, or augment, the images taken by the SenseCam with images taken by other people at these locations or events. To achieve this Aiden augments the SenseCam images with images from the Flickr (user-generated) photo-sharing website, a resource of hundreds of millions of photographs. There a number of research challenges inherent in achieving this aim, as well as no clearly defined technique of evaluating the usefulness of any given approach.
