Mapping the lived experiences of intersex/variations of sex characteristics in Ireland: contextualising lay and professional knowledge to enable development of appropriate law and policy.

Abstract
Intersex is an umbrella term for people born with atypical variations of sex characteristics (I/VSC) estimated to be between 0.5% and 1.7% the population according to the UN. This report is novel as it uncovers the lived experiences of those with I/VSC, their partners and the health care professionals who care for them in Ireland. It will sets this analysis in the context of the legal response to I/VSC in order to determine how Ireland meets in obligations towards those with I/VSC. This report brings together an understanding of I/VSC from the perspectives of sociology, medical and legal disciplines which is unique in the study of I/VSC. It paints a comprehensive picture of the current state of I/VSC in Ireland.
